There is often a conflict between art as a business and art as an obsession. I am often in the throes of that. I have a "day job", not that it pays all that much, but I still try to work in my art in every spare moment. Not because I can sell it, which I seldom do, but because I have to. If I have to base what I do on what will sell, why do that at all? Yet it would be rewarding if people bought my work. Somehow exculpatory. It's not free after all. The materials (rag paper that I use is right at $20.00 a pop). And the time it takes to produce these works. I work tight; it takes forEVER to finish. And don't get me started on the archival matting and framing.
So what's the point? None really. Just wanting to vent. But just wait till I die. Rich will have a flat file full of work to sell and the only good artist is a dead artist.
